Kung Fu Hustle

Kung Fu Hustle was a really fun movie, filled with excessive comedy and action scenes that are hilarious and enjoyable to watch. It’s also packed with Hollywood references; one in particular that stood out to me is the reference to The Shining, when Stephen Chow’s character goes to help The Beast escape from the mental asylum. The hall fills with blood just as in The Shining

One scene I really enjoyed was with the two assassins. The CGI of them playing the instrument and shooting things at the other characters was incredible to watch, especially as this film was made in 2004 and didn’t have all the technology available that films have nowadays.

Another thing I appreciated was that the film didn’t have the usual, or stereotypical, heroes. They were just normal everyday people, from the landlady to the shop owners. The fighting scenes with them in Pig Sty Alley were especially fun to watch. The film was engaging with its initial focus on Pig Sty Alley and all the people living and working there. We didn’t really get to know the main character until much later, which I actually preferred. I liked getting to know the people of the town, instead of focusing so heavily on one main hero character for so long.

Hong Kong action films, like Kung Fu Hustle, have become incredibly popular worldwide. Because it focuses on using images and actions over words and dialogues, it has the ability to reach more audiences and connect with more people. It has become such a sensation for a reason; the films are extremely entertaining and draw you in from the very start.

  1. I strongly agree with you when it comes to the main character. I'm glad the movie wasn't very focused on him and gave us time with all the other characters. I did like the main character but I definitely think that if the movie was focused on him it wouldn't have been nearly as good because of how fun the other characters are.

    1. Hi Jessie! I totally agree with you and Trent. I appreciate how even though these heroes have incredible fighting skills, they are not all like "I am a big tough guy". I can't think of specific examples at the moment, but I feel like I have seen a lot of action films with "heroes" that act like that. The heroes in "Kung Fu Hustle" have personalities beyond their fighting skills.

  2. I agree with you that one of the fun things about the film is the way that it innovates on the usual action film formula and offers us different protagonists and narrative shout-outs to other films. Part of the pleasure of this film is how it honors and also breaks with kung fu film traditions
